ANALYSIS
Stokes, a second-round pick of the Marlins in 2000, has been out of baseball since 2007. He was named the Midwest League Player of the Year in 2002 after hitting .341 with 27 home runs in 349 at-bats, but injuries derailed his march to the majors soon after. At 28, his chances are running out, but it would make a nice story if the former prized prospect gets his career back on track.

Stokes got a long look in spring training and came out of the gate strong at Triple-A, but yet another injury (this one a back problem) wrecked his season and cast his future further in doubt. He's the kind of player who could appear "out of nowhere" down the road and carve out a decent career for himself, but until he proves he can stay in a lineup for 130+ games at any level, he's not worth considering as a prospect.
Injuries once again wrecked Stokes' season, and it's looking more and more like he won't ever be healthy enough to fulfill his massive power potential. He'll only be 24 this year, though, so there's still time for him to put together a 400+ at bat, 30+ HR season at Triple-A and get his career back on track.
Stokes didn't have a bad year at Double-A, but his wrist problems resurfaced and he clearly has some developing to do in the area of plate discipline. The recent signing of Carlos Delgado should have the organization attempting to develop him as a corner outfielder, or looking to move him. Given the skill-set, as well as the organization's depth and needs, we're leaning to the trade scenario.
Stokes struggled through his year at High-A, striking out almost four times as often as he walked, before crashing and burning in the Arizona Fall League (.145 batting average, one walk, 16 K's). The trade for Hee Seop Choi buys him some development time, and it looks like he'll need it.
The Sporting News Minor League Player of the Year, Stokes had a big year in his first taste of full-season baseball. With Adrian Gonzalez ahead of him there's no need for the Marlins to rush Stokes, so look for him to open the year at High-A in the Florida State League. How he deals with the pitcher's parks in the FSL will determine how quickly he sees Double-A.
