Rest-of-Season Projections
Hernandez will start the Rays' spring training opener on Wednesday, the Rays' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Hernandez is making the long climb back after major shoulder surgery back in 2006, and while he has virtually no chance of winning a spot on the Rays' Opening Day roster, he was a nice talent grab by them last August.

Still climbing out of a hole after rotator-cuff surgery in '03, Hernandez fought his command at Triple-A last year. Wandy Rodriguez got the innings Hernandez should have and didn't pitch that well, so there's opportunity in '06. He's a deep sleeper, someone to keep in mind in the endgame. He could toss 70 innings of 3.50 ball, with 60 Ks.

Hernandez will start the season in the minors and make three starts for Triple-A Round Rock before the Astros choose a pitcher to fill the fifth starter role on April 12. "I feel like he's going to need the full complement of the next three outings to be ready," manager Phil Garner told the team's official web site. "This is actually good for him. He's in a great frame of mind, and for me, in the two years I've seen him, he looks the best, he's thinking the best and he's determined to do it. If he doesn't come back [on April 12], he'll be here later. He's going to help us somewhere, somehow."
