It's a measure of how unready for the majors Blanco was last season after being a Rule 5 pick that the Nationals decided to start him out at High-A in 2006. It's also a measure of how much GM Jim Bowden overestimated Blanco's abilities that he was unable to dominate High-A, or even hold his own, as a 24-year-old. It seems unlikely that he'll ever fulfill the 40-homer visions Bowden had for him, at any professional level.
Blanco is GM Jim Bowden's type of player -- that is to say, he looks like a baseball player without necessarily performing like one. The odds of him becoming the next Wily Mo Pena are very, very slim. He'll come off the bench as a back up first baseman.
Blanco's power potential is what encouraged the Reds to trade for him in the Todd Walker trade before the 2003 season, but it's his lack of plate discipline that keeps him from advancing rapidly up the food chain. His lack of speed and defensive prowess further dampen expectations. Former Reds GM Jim Bowden claimed Blanco for the Nationals in the Rule 5 draft, so he'll have a chance to take a big leap up the food chain this spring.
Acquired in the Todd Walker trade, Blanco was limited to 69 games due to an elbow injury at high Single-A Potomac, none of them at third base. Despite that, Blanco demonstrated some growth at the plate, considerably improving his previously futile plate discipline and increasing his power. Edwin Encarnacion is ahead of him on the Reds' prospect depth chart at third base.
