Springer has announced his retirement, reports the Alexandria Daily Town Talk.
ANALYSIS
Springer said he considered retirement at this time last season, but still had a drive to go to the gym, which led him back to the field with Cincinnati. This year, he doesn't have that desire to be working out. He played for 10 teams during his 18 year major league career and finishes with a 4.52 ERA, almost exactly league average for his playing career.

At press time, Springer had filed for free agency and was contemplating retirement. Even if he signs with a team, he shouldn't be on your radar.
In two years with the Cardinals, Springer has been nothing short of outstanding: In 116.1 innings, he has a 2.24 ERA, 1.01 WHIP, and 111:37 K:BB ratio. There's no reason not to think he can give the Cardinals another quality 40 innings in 2009, but he's already 40. We're still waiting for his arm to finally fall off.
With an 8-1 record, 2.18 ERA, 0.909 WHIP, and 3.50 K:BB in 76 appearances, Springer was the kind of guy who showed up on a lot of fantasy league champions in 2007. Springer has set a career-high in appearances in each of his last three seasons, so it is possible that his arm will finally fall off after his 16-year career. He'll be back setting up Jason Isringhausen in 2008, but it's unlikely he'll come close to repeating last year's stellar numbers.
Springer was another oft-used reliever out of Phil Garner's bullpen, making 72 appearances and posting a record of 1-1 with a 3.47 ERA. He was used mainly as a situational righty, as he logged just 59.2 innings in his 72 appearances. He should have a similar role in St. Louis.
He'd thrown 50 2/3 major league innings in the 21st century before showing up in the Astros pen and becoming their No. 4 right-hander. He's too homer-prone for a larger role, so he'll likely fade back into obscurity.
