Edmonds (Achilles) has decided to retire, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.
ANALYSIS
His injury simply wasn't recovering to the point where the 40-year-old wanted to continue pushing his way back toward a roster spot with the Cards this spring. The eight-time Gold Glove winner retires with a career .284/.376/.527 line and 393 homers in 2,011 games between six MLB clubs.

Edmonds' season ended with him injuring his Achilles' tendon on a home run trot in Milwaukee. He tried to rehab the injury before the NLDS series against the Phillies, but it was to no avail. His comeback season after taking 2009 off was pretty successful when he was able to play, but the injuries became more frequent for him and harder for him to rehab. If he plays another season, he'll be relegated to more pinch-hit and spot start duties. At this point he'd be a better fit in the AL where he could DH to extend his career.
