How does Tucker Davidson compare to other relievers?
This section compares his stats with all relief pitcher seasons from the previous three seasons (minimum 30 innings)*. The bar represents the player's percentile rank. For example, if the bar is halfway across, then the player falls into the 50th percentile for that stat and it would be considered average.

* Exit Velocity, Barrels/BBE %, Balls Hit 95+ MPH %, and Spin Rate are benchmarked against 2019 data (min 30 IP). See here for more exit velocity/barrels stats plus an explanation of current limitations with that data set.
  • K/BB
    Strikeout to walk ratio.
  • K/9
    Average strikeouts per nine innings.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2023
2022
2021
Davidson was the primary target for the Angels in the trade that sent closer Raisel Iglesias to Atlanta in August, and he stayed on Los Angeles' big-league roster for the remainder of the campaign in what was essentially an audition for the team's 2023 rotation. There were a few decent moments among the southpaw's eight outings with Los Angeles, but he mostly failed to impress, posting a 6.87 ERA, 1.66 WHIP and 23:22 K:BB over 36.2 innings. Davidson struggled mightily with his four-seamer in the majors last season, recording just a 14.6% whiff rate on the pitch and surrendering a .301 average to opposing batters. He consequently flipped the script from his previous campaigns and turned to his slider as his primary offering, tossing it 44.1% of the time to better results. While the pitch can be a weapon, it's hard to get by without an effective fastball, especially without a developed third offering. Angels coaches have worked with Davidson on throwing his changeup more often, and whether he's able to do so with success could be key to his outlook moving forward. There's a chance Davidson could nab the final spot in the team's six-man rotation next season, but he'd be on thin ice given his unproven results in the majors thus far.
After failing to break camp with the Braves out of spring training, Davidson capped off his roller coaster 2021 by starting Game 5 of the World Series against the Astros. He did not factor into the decision after allowing two runs over two innings as the opener, but it was a nice cap on his season after the southpaw spent four months on IL with forearm inflammation. Prior to his injury, Davidson was serviceable in four starts for Atlanta, allowing eight runs over 20 innings (3.60 ERA) with 18 strikeouts. However, the lefty's command woes persisted (3.6 BB/9) after he appeared to improve in that area over 23 Triple-A innings (2.0 BB/9). Davidson doesn't appear to have much else to prove in the minors after compiling a 2.76 ERA and 1.28 WHIP across five minor-league seasons. He'll begin the 2022 campaign on Atlanta's major-league roster but is likely to serve out of the bullpen and as a potential sixth starter.
There were some rumblings that Davidson could challenge for a rotation spot amidst the condensed nature of the 2020 season, but the left-hander ended up spending most of the campaign at the Braves' alternate training site. He did get a chance to make his big-league debut against Boston in late September but struggled mightily, yielding seven runs (two earned) over 1.2 frames. Davidson walked four batters in that start and missed the plate on over half of his pitches, highlighting the command issues that dogged him over his previous two minor-league seasons. While he ascended from High-A to Triple-A during that stretch and posted otherwise good numbers, Davidson also registered a troubling 4.1 BB/9. He has an electric fastball and a good enough arsenal to succeed as a starter, but his role could ultimately be determined by his ability to get the ball over the plate.

Could start Game 5?
PAtlanta Braves
October 28, 2021
Davidson is an option to start Game 5 of the World Series on Sunday with Charlie Morton out due to a fractured fibula.
ANALYSIS
Davidson was added to Atlanta's World Series roster Wednesday after Morton suffered his injury in Game 1. Max Fried got Game 2 on Wednesday and Ian Anderson is in line to start Game 3 on Friday, but after that, the team has plenty of question marks. Davidson made four MLB starts this season and could get the call in a big spot.
