Turning heads in GCL
Cruz, 17, is hitting .313/.337/.434 with two home runs and four steals (on five attempts) in 83 at-bats in the Gulf Coast League.
ANALYSIS
A top-five international prospect in last year's J-2 class, Cruz has wasted no time establishing himself as one of the top prospects in rookie ball. His 70-to-80 grade speed and ability to stick up the middle was the selling point when the Braves signed him, but for him to be showcasing this level of comfort in the box is very exciting. At 6-foot-1, 180 pounds, Cruz could certainly develop into a five-category fantasy threat, and he should get hyped as such this offseason if he can keep up this pace.

2017 Fantasy Outlook
One of the top prizes from the 2015 international free agent signing class, Cruz made his stateside debut in 2016 as a 17-year-old and flashed the tools that earned him a $2 million bonus out of the Dominican Republic. At 6-foot-1, 180 pounds, he will be able to hit some mistakes out and won't be a zero in the power department, but that's not his game. The tool prospective fantasy owners need to be aware of is his 80-grade speed. He currently plays shortstop, but he lacks a plus arm and there's a chance he moves to second base or center field. The package is awfully reminiscent of what Yankees prospect Jorge Mateo brings to the table. Like with Mateo, it's unclear what kind of hitter Cruz will turn into. He had some contact issues and only walked five times in 51 games, but it's hard to judge a 17-year-old too harshly for a subpar approach. The speed and pedigree make him worthy of consideration in deeper dynasty leagues.
