Leaves and rejoins Giants
Reed cleared waivers and elected free agency Friday but was immediately re-signed by the Giants on a minor-league deal, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
ANALYSIS
Reed was cast off the roster to make room for Kevin Pillar after going 0-for-8 with six strikeouts in four games. He'll remain with the organization in a depth role but won't necessarily be the first in line when an opening clears up in the big-league outfield as he's no longer on the 40-man roster.

The 2011 fifth-round pick got a brief look in major league camp during spring training, but he ultimately began, and spent the majority of the season at Triple-A Colorado Springs. While there, Reed swiped 20 bases in 28 tries and boasted a .366 OBP, but he also hit just .248 and continued striking out at a high rate. Following the conclusion of the minor league season, the outfielder got a chance in the majors as a September callup, but wilted in 24 plate appearances. Entering his age-24 season, Reed faces an uphill battle to make the Opening Day roster, but a solid showing in the minors could go a long way in earning a more extended look in the big leagues sometime this summer. His lack of elite tools means he will need to be playing close to every day to compile enough runs and RBI to be useful in mixed leagues. In order to do that, he will need to really hit. The most likely scenario is that Reed settles in as organizational depth who earns occasional trips to the majors.
