Werner was sent outright to Triple-A Sacramento on Thursday, MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Werner was designated for assignment last week, and unsurprisingly went unclaimed. He's a low-upside pitching prospect coming off a lousy season that saw him post a 5.78 ERA over 165 innings with Triple-A Sacramento.

2013 Fantasy Outlook
In 2012, Werner made 18 starts at Double-A San Antonio, before moving up to Triple-A Tucson for four starts, before finally making his MLB debut with the Padres in late August, where he made eight starts. Each step of the way his strikeout rate remained steady, but his walk rate did not and what followed was a loss of control and an elevated ERA. In the offseason he was traded to Oakland, where he figures to give the team organizational depth, behind a quality starting staff. His future may be that of a lefty specialist as he is adept at missing left-handed bats and inducing those that do make contact to put the ball on the ground. Either way, it's doubtful that we will see Werner starting many games for Oakland in 2013 as he still needs time to refine his command.
