Kolbrin Vitek

Vitek spent the full season at High-A Salem in the Carolina League, continuing an experiment at third base that is still a work in progress. Finding a position for the former first-round pick (2010) has been a challenge for the organization and they may have to move him to the outfield. It appears the focus he's made on learning to play third has stunted his development as a hitter, but he finished the season with a strong second half and projects as a high-average hitter with an ability to hit to all fields. He has good swing mechanics and should develop power as he sees and learns to hit more advanced pitching. Look for him to start the season at Double-A Portland, though another position switch could delay is development overall.

Vitek played at short-season Lowell and Low-A Greenville to kick off is professional career after being drafted in the first round by Boston in 2010 draft. All the hitting traits displayed at Ball State were certainly evident: good plate discipline, a smooth swing without unnecessary movement, some present power. There's still a need to find his best position. A second baseman in college, Vitek played primarily at third base in Boston's organization, but there are some mechanical issues (footwork, transfers) and he may eventually land in the outfield. Low-A Greenville appears to be his starting spot for 2011.

Vitek, 21, was Boston's first-round selection in 2010 draft. A good defender with a plus arm, Vitek played second base during his final season at Ball State, but will be moved to third base to start his career with Boston. Vitek knows how to work a count, showing good patience at the plate and mechanics. His swing is without unnecessary movement. He has room to grow his frame, but doesn't project to be a more than an average power hitter in the bigs.
