Gets minors deal with Rays
PTampa Bay Rays
February 10, 2021
Allie's agent, Gavin Kahn, announced Wednesday via his personal Twitter account that his client signed a minor-league contract with the Rays.
ANALYSIS
The deal includes an invitation to the Rays' big-league camp. A 2010 second-round pick of the Pirates, Allie began his career as a pitcher before trying his hand at first base and outfield in 2013. After the move to a full-time hitting role failed to get his career off the ground, the 29-year-old switched back to pitching in 2017, but he still has yet to receive his first taste of the big leagues. He topped out at the Triple-A level as a member of the Dodgers organization in 2019, posting an 8.16 ERA over 32 innings in relief with Oklahoma City.

2011
Allie enjoyed about as much success hitting as he did pitching after the organization converted him from pitcher to third baseman in 2012. None. The 2010 second-round draft pick followed up a disappointing 2011 debut with an even worse pitching stint. The righty, who can throw as hard as 100 mph, walked eight batters while recording two outs in two outings before the team decided to move him to third base, where he played in high school. Allie batted .213/.314/.340 with three homers in 150 Gulf Coast League at-bats. His 21:50 BB:K ratio doesn't portend much future success. Still, the bonus baby is but 21 years of age and the Pirates will give him every chance to show that the $2 million investment wasn't a total bust. Don't be surprised if he moves back to the mound.
Allie's control was a major issue in 2011, but given his age and the ability to light up the radar gun with a 100 mph fastball, the Pirates will be plenty patient with their 2010 second-round pick and he's likely a couple of seasons away from making an impact with the big club as a result.
Teams shied away from Allie in the 2010 draft because of his apparent desire to attend college, but the Pirates plucked him in the second round and signed him for $2.25 million. Allie, who throws mid-90s heat on a consistent basis, prefers to close but Pittsburgh general manager Neal Huntington wants to see what he has in a starting role. Upon signing, Allie observed Low-A ball, but didn't play until the Florida Instructional League. It's likely that he'll begin the 2011 campaign at Low-A as he transitions from high school to life in professional baseball. Ultimately, Allie's role will determine how long it will take him to ascend through the system, and it's reasonable to think he won't see Pittsburgh until 2013 if he remains a starter.
