Diaz had one hit, a double, in his four spring training at-bats.
ANALYSIS
Diaz in an unlikely candidate to reach the majors this season, with Triple-A Toledo teammate Dixon Machado serving as Detroit’s high-profile middle-infield prospect. It would take a raft of injuries for Diaz to get called up.

Diaz hit .279/.356/.341 in 340 at-bats with Triple-A Toledo in 2011. The 25-year-old shortstop isn't much of a threat to pick up an extra base hits and he doesn't offer any value on the base paths, either. His upside remains that of an utility infielder.
Diaz came to the Pirates from Boston with a reputation of a good glove, but fielded at a .923 clip in 15 games with Pittsburgh in 2010. He doesn't hit much (.248/.302/.285 in 274 Triple-A at-bats) and he doesn't run very often -- he was five of six in stolen base attempts. After he was non-tendered by Pittsburgh he signed with Detroit. It's likely that if he makes it to the majors for an extended period of time, then it will be as a backup middle infielder and little else.
Diaz, one of two players traded from Boston for Adam LaRoche last summer, is better known for his defense than his offense. Diaz played in 44 games for Double-A Indianapolis, batting .233/.273/.240 with no homers and eight RBI. Despite already playing in the minors for four years, Diaz is still just 23. Because of his defensive prowess, he could see time with Pittsburgh in 2010 as a backup infielder. From a fantasy perspective, however, he ranks at the bottom of the list.
Diaz began the season at High-A Lancaster and was promoted to Double-A Portland. He's got elite fielding skills and mad range, but the bat is what holds him back. The good sign is that he overcame slow starts at both stops and actually improved going up a level. He'll start the season in Portland.
