Yahoo DFS Baseball: Monday Picks

This article is part of our Yahoo DFS Baseball series.

PITCHER

Luis Severino, NYY vs. CLE ($51): Monday is loaded with top pitching options and I'm taking one, albeit at a smaller rate. Severino provides the same upside as Corey Kluber ($65) and Max Scherzer ($63), but is much cheaper. Severino was blown up by the Red Sox a few starts ago, but has at least 25 fantasy points in his other eight most recent outings. The Indians just destroyed the Royals in their weekend series (20-0 composite score line), yet only sport a .318 wOBA and have a 21.8 percent K rate against righties in August.

Mike Montgomery, CHC vs. PIT ($34): I needed a way to save money and this is it. Montgomery isn't huge on strikeouts but is still posting solid numbers, allowing four hits and zero runs in six innings in his last start against the Reds. The Pirates make this situation even better with a .259 wOBA and 23.1 percent K rate against lefties in the past month.

CATCHER

Alex Avila, CHC vs. PIT ($13): I haven't used Avila much since his move to the Cubs, but this seems like a good spot as he comes in with a hit in his last seven starts. In his last 45 plate appearances against righties, he has a .442 wOBA and .306 ISO. Even with a 31.1 percent K rate, that shouldn't matter against Trevor Williams, who has a 14.9 percent K rate against lefties. Williams was great last outing, but he's been all over the place and allowed eight runs to the Cardinals before that.

FIRST BASE

Miguel Cabrera, DET at COL ($14): As of writing this, Cabrera's appeal of his suspension still hasn't been ruled on. If that happens Monday, I'd switch to Brandon Moss ($14). As for Cabrera, I'll take a chance on him after three hits Sunday. He's the type of batter that can thrive at Coors Field and gets a good matchup with Antonio Senzatela on the mound. Senzatela has much worse numbers at home against righties with a 4.61 xFIP. This will be his second straight start, but he was moved to the bullpen for a reason.

SECOND BASE

Chad Pinder, OAK at LAA ($9): Pinder has shown some consistency lately and he's worth a gamble due to price. In his last 29 plate appearances against lefties, he has a .449 wOBA and .292 ISO. Andrew Heaney wasn't good in his first two starts, giving up 15 hits and nine runs, and will be hard to trust for the Angels.

THIRD BASE

Luis Valbuena, LAA vs. OAK ($15): On the mound opposite Heaney is Daniel Gossett, who hasn't been much better for the A's. Gossett gave up five runs and eight hits at Baltimore last time out and has a poor 4.55 xFIP against lefties. Valbuena has shown he can provide great value at times with a .393 wOBA and .333 ISO in his last 59 plate appearances against righties.

SHORTSTOP

Adeiny Hechavarria, TB at KC ($7): Hechavarria won't be on many teams because his numbers aren't great. Then again, he's really cheap and has a decent .332 wOBA and .246 ISO in his last 60 plate appearances against righties. Ian Kennedy has given up at least three runs in his last five starts and has a 4.70 xFIP against righties.

OUTFIELD

Melky Cabrera, KC vs. TB ($15): I would've taken more Royals in this matchup, but they were shut out in their weekend series against the Indians, so Cabrera will be my only selection. It also helps that he has two hits in four of the last five games to boost his .370 wOBA against righties in August. Austin Pruitt has been brutal as a starter, giving up 11 runs and 18 hits in his last two starts.

Carlos Gonzalez, COL vs. DET ($15): You thought I was crazy passing on all the Rockies in my lineup, but I'm not done yet. I went with a couple cheaper bats because I think everyone will have success against Jordan Zimmermann. Gonzalez is also much better at home with a .431 wOBA and .265 ISO in his last 40 plate appearances against righties. Zimmermann is on an incredibly bad run of seven earned runs in each of his last three starts.

Gerardo Parra, COL vs. DET ($16): Unlike Gonzalez, Parra had success on the recent road trip with eight hits in his last five games. Parra also has a cool .444 wOBA in his last 42 plate appearances against righties. Zimmermann struggles against both sides of the plate, but has a worse .382 wOBA allowed and 5.31 xFIP against lefties.
