Johnson was in a playing-time battle with a handful of other running backs for the right to be the backup to Jay Ajayi but didn't impress the coaching staff enough to stick with Miami. He could be brought back at the end of Week 1 when his salary wouldn't be guaranteed, but that seems unlikely.

Johnson hasn't seen action in an actual NFL game since the 2014 season with Jacksonville, but the lack of recent snaps didn't stop the Dolphins from signing him to a reserve/future contract earlier this year. While his new organization may be considering him a mere camp body, an injury to one of the backs in front of him could provide the chance he needs to land on the 53-man roster by Week 1.

The former seventh-round pick sat out 2015, after gaining 86 yards on 29 carries, along with two touchdowns, in his rookie campaign in 2014 in Jacksonville. Johnson, who was a part of the Jaguars' final cuts last summer, rushed for 1,139 yards and three touchdowns in his junior year at Central Florida while adding 30 receptions, a versatile skill set that could be a key to earning him a roster spot.

As a rookie last season, Johnson competed for carries with Toby Gerhart, Denard Robinson and Jordan Todman, and after doing the same in this summer he was cut by the Jaguars.

Johnson is a darkhorse candidate for carries in the Jaguars inexperienced backfield made up of longtime back-up Toby Gerhart, the undersized Jordan Todman, and unfinished project Denard Robinson. Jacksonville spent a seventh round draft pick on Johnson, who declared for the draft as a junior out of UCF.
