Johnson is on the outside looking in at a starting spot at linebacker, but he'll be given a chance to see the field on special teams.
Johnson's high tackle totals didn't translate with his move from Cincinnati to Carolina. He'll compete for time with Na'il Diggs during camp this offseason and he could emerge as a viable source of tackles for IDP owners if he's able to nail down a starting job again, but there are plenty of better options in most leagues.
After leading the Bengals in tackles three of the past four season, Johnson signed with the Panthers in the offseason. Johnson is going to be playing the weak-side for the Panthers and his numbers should stay consistent with the past couple years.
Even though he led the Bengals in tackles in 2006, Johnson isn't guaranteed a starting job, following the acquisition of Ed Hartwell at weakside linebacker. Chances are that Johnson will still earn a starting role out of training camp, and once he's in there, he'll be a good source of tackles.
Johnson will be one of the main rotation linebackers for the Bengals this season, though whether he will start for the entire season is unclear. He is likely to begin the season as the starting weakside linebacker in place of Brian Simmons, who moves to the middle for the suspended Odell Thurman. When Thurman returns Johnson may or may not move out of the starting line-up, but either way he is likely to get plenty of playing time and has shown a nose for tackling the football in his first two seasons.
Currently listed as the starting strong-side linebacker, Johnson will likely split time with rookies Odell Thurman and David Pollack at middle and strong-side linebacker this season. Even if he does not remain the starter, he will get plenty of minutes and should be a solid source of tackles.
The undersized linebacker was a top-notch playmaker in college, but projects as a situational player for the Bengals.
