ANALYSIS
Melton injured his knee in the first half of Thursday's preseason finale against the Cardinals, but was able to return to the contest in the second half. He figured to be a long shot to make the final roster, as he was fourth on the depth chart for the right defensive end position.

Melton will factor into the rotation at defensive tackle, likely spelling Gerald McCoy and Clinton McDonald.
Melton played just three games last season due to a torn ACL, but prior to the injury he was a disruptive force at defensive tackle for the Bears (13 sacks over two seasons). If he returns to full health, he should prove to be an able replacement for Jason Hatcher in the middle of the Cowboys' d-line.
Melton parlayed a breakout six-sack, 44-tackle campaign into a franchise tender, earning him a lucrative one-year, $8.5 million deal. It's unclear how much room for growth he has, but with 13 sacks over the last two seasons, he's proven to be one of the better pass-rushing defensive tackles in the game today.
The sky continues to be the limit for Melton, as the coaching staff cannot stop singing his praises. While he did seem to disappear at times last year, a full offseason can only further his development this year.
Melton showed impressive flashes in 2010 giving the Bears high hopes for the new season. Consequently, Melton is lining up as the starting under tackle for Bears during camp, a position which the team is suddenly very deep at.
