Te'o, who signed with the Saints last season, was expected to compete for the starting middle linebacker job but was beat out by A.J. Klein to start the season. Nevertheless, Te'o was productive when presented with opportunities. The former Notre Dame star notched only 62 total tackles (42 solo) in 16 games, but in the six games where Klein missed most or all of the contest with an injury, Te'o recorded 37 total tackles, averaging more than six per game. Early training-camp depth charts indicate that the Saints may be considering starting Te'o at middle linebacker to begin the year, with Klein and offseason acquisition Demario Davis moving to outside linebacker. Even though Te'o is expected to come off the field on most passing downs, if the sixth-year pro is able to secure even a nominal starting role, he could have value in deeper IDP leagues.
Te'o suffered a torn Achilles last September, ending his 2016 season after only two games. Seemingly pleased with his recovery, the Saints signed the former Charger to a two-year contract this offseason. The 26-year-old linebacker will have ample competition for playing time in New Orleans, but on a team without any proven standout performers, Te'o should have every opportunity to earn a starting linebacker spot. While injuries limited him during his four-year stint in San Diego, when healthy, Te'o started 34 of his 38 games and averaged 5.8 tackles per game.
Starting opposite Denzel Perryman in the Chargers 3-4 base defense, Te'o was a bit of a revelation in 2015, posting a career high in tackles (83), 20 more than his previous two seasons. While Te'o has yet to play 14 games, much less 16 games in a season, he's developed into a productive middle linebacker and could be in line for better numbers after the team invested heavily into the defense this offseason. Heading into a contract year, Te'o should be on the radar for most IDP leagues.
Despite missing six games with a foot injury, Te’o’s second season in the league was a productive one. For the second year in a row, he notched 61 total tackles, but he did it in three fewer games and also added his first career sack and interception last year. Te’o also finished the season strong, recording double-digit tackles in each of the last two games of the year, so he seems to be getting better with experience. Te’o should be a key contributor in the middle of the Chargers defense in 2015, but rookie second-rounder Denzel Perryman could provide some competition for snaps moving forward.
Te'o was a major disappointment as a rookie, posting just 61 tackles and no sacks, interceptions or forced fumbles. It's possible that a preseason foot injury limited him throughout the year, as he underwent surgery on the foot at the season's conclusion. With better health and a year's worth of experience on his side, Te'o ought to show significant improvement in 2014. Aside from Te'o and Donald Butler, the Chargers don't have any obvious candidates to compete for nickel formation snaps, meaning Te'o has no reason to not secure a three-down role.
Free agent signing and former Packer D.J. Smith is a concern, but Te'o will be given every chance to win a starting and nickel formation role as a rookie with the Chargers. The increasing prevalence of three- and four-wideout formations means that roughly half of a defense's snaps come on 'passing downs,' and teams don't spend second-round picks on linebackers who only play half of the time. That means Te'o would have to significantly disappoint to not end up playing 75 percent or more of San Diego's snaps, but if he secures that role he should safely reach 100 tackles after easily passing the mark in each of his last three years at Notre Dame.
