Hawkins has announced his retirement from the NFL, the Patriots' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Hawkins signed with the Patriots in May and had a chance to stick with the team as depth wideout, but the 31-year-old indicated Tuesday that his "body just didn't respond the way it should" as he prepared for training camp. The 5-foot-7, 180-pounder saw action in 16 contests for the Browns in 2016, en route to hauling in 33 passes for 324 yards and three TDs.

The 31-year-old Hawkins suited up for 16 games with the Browns last season, logging 33 receptions for 324 yards and three touchdowns. The 5-7, 180-pounder was set to enter a crowded wideout situation in New England, but elected before training camp to retire.
Hawkins' 2015 campaign was cut short due to a pair of concussions, but he's projected to be back at full health heading into training camp prior to the 2016 season. He'll be an early favorite to start at wide receiver -- more specifically out of the slot -- but there are plenty of young options behind him, including first-rounder Corey Coleman, who could push for additional snaps and targets. Hawkins will also need to get comfortable with another new quarterback, as Robert Griffin has joined Josh McCown to battle for the Browns' starting spot. With two seasons in Cleveland under his belt, Hawkins has just two touchdowns in a Browns uniform, so his fantasy value may be somewhat limited to PPR formats.
Hawkins is arguably the quickest wide receiver in the league. He's also one of the smallest. At 5-7, 180, and running a 4.34 40, he's a lot like the Rams' Tavon Austin, only without the pedigree and with more success as a pass catcher. Last year, Hawkins saw 112 targets and managed 13.4 YPC and 7.4 YPT in a below-average passing game. He won't see much red-zone work, and he'll only rarely make a play downfield (two catches of 40-plus), but get him the ball in space, and he'll make defenders miss. This year, Hawkins will have to adapt to a new quarterback, likely Josh McCown, and he finds himself battling for snaps behind free-agent acquisitions Dwayne Bowe and Brian Hartline. But Hawkins is likely to see plenty of snaps out of the slot, and an aging Bowe and athletically pedestrian Hartline are hardly roadblocks to a consistent workload.
Undersized slot wizard Hawkins heads to a Browns team suddenly in need of WR depth thanks to Josh Gordon's season-long suspension. Given Hawkins' elusiveness and ability to find open space, he could prove to be a favorite target of Johnny Manziel's once the rookie takes over duties under center (Brian Hoyer will open the season as the team's starter at QB) and starts dancing out of the pocket, but Hawkins will need to avoid the injuries that cut his season in half last year.
It's hard to imagine a player with more lateral quickness than Hawkins. While he ran a 4.34 40 at the NFL Combine, it's Hawkins' ability to change directions at full speed and shake defenders that stands out. At 5-7, 175, Hawkins saw most of his work on short passes, and though he did have two catches of 40-plus yards, they were of the catch-and-run variety. With Mohamed Sanu healthy, it's likely Hawkins again fills a No. 3 receiver/slot role. He’s unlikely to see a ton of volume, and last year's four touchdowns probably represent his ceiling.
Hawkins will try to make the Bengals' team at wide receiver, but likely has no fantasy value this season.
