Ratliff was released by the Bears on Thursday.
ANALYSIS
After accruing 6.5 sacks in just 11 games last season, Ratliff entered 2015 as the Bears' top defensive lineman, making his release an unexpected development. It appears his termination wasn't for performance-based reasons, as Ratliff's dismissal likely stemmed from a heated argument with GM Ryan Pace outside the Bears' practice facility Wednesday morning, reports ESPN Chicago's Jeff Dickerson. The Chicago Sun-Times' Adam Jahns reports that the confrontation required police intervention, with Ratliff ultimately escorted away from the premises. It's not clear what's next for the 34-year-old, whose off-the-field baggage and history of disruptive behavior in the locker room may give other teams pause in signing him.

Ratliff was one of the few overachievers on a pitiful Bears defense last season, registering 37 tackles and 6.5 sacks in just 11 games. Those numbers were especially impressive for a player who lined up primarily as a tackle, and Ratliff might have submitted the best single-game performances of any NFL lineman on Oct. 19 against the Dolphins, when he recorded 3.5 sacks (all in the first half) and a team-leading seven tackles. The four-time Pro Bowler will turn 34 in August and isn’t the same force on a week-to-week basis that he was during his heyday with the Cowboys, but he’s still viewed as a pillar on the Chicago defensive line. Ratliff’s ability to slot in at either nose tackle or end should allow for a smooth transition to the new 3-4 scheme implemented by coordinator Vic Fangio, though the setup does figure to inhibit his sack production as he takes on more of a run-stopping role. Nonetheless, even if his counting stats dwindle, Ratliff should be perfectly dependable from a real-life perspective, so long as he stays on the field. After missing 26 games overall in the past three seasons, Ratliff will have to sit out right out of the gate in 2015 after receiving a three-game suspension from the league in August, which stemmed from his guilty plea in a Jan. 2013 DWI arrest.
A four-time Pro Bowler with the Cowboys from 2008 to 2011, Ratliff saw his career with Dallas head downhill the last two seasons, with a surfeit of injuries, a DWI arrest and diminished effectiveness resulting in his release last October. Ratliff latched on with a Bears squad desperate for help in the middle and proved to be a reliable stopgap solution at the three-technique spot, amassing nine stops (including 1.5 sacks) in five games. While no longer a top talent at defensive tackle, Ratliff played well enough with the Bears to earn a two-year extension, and now looks primed to open 2014 as a starter. He'll be pushed by highly-drafted rookies Will Sutton and Ego Ferguson, however, which could make Ratliff a risk to hold down a starting role for the long haul.
Undersized veteran NT managed to be on the field for just six games in 2012 due to ankle and hernia injuries. The Cowboys' switch to a 4-3 defense should save some wear and tear on Ratliff, but don't look for big IDP numbers.
Ratliff's numbers continue to dwindle (just 5.5 sacks the last two seasons after he registered 13.5 in 2008-2009) as years of playing as an undersized nose tackle have taken their toll, but the Cowboys have been reluctant to move him to defensive end where he might start to be a factor in the pass rush once again. He's a valuable player for the Dallas team defense, but don't look for an IDP resurgence as long as he remains at NT.
Ratliff bulked up in 2010 to try and better handle his nose tackle role, but the only result was fewer tackles and sacks on his ledger. The Cowboys would love to move him out to DE, where his ferocious motor could make a bigger impact, but until someone else emerges in the middle of the line Ratliff will stay at NT.
Despite his relative lack of size Ratliff emerged as a disruptive force at nose tackle in 2008, playing in all 16 games and recording 7.5 sacks (nearly doubling his career total) with 51 tackles. The Cowboys have considered moving him out to DE in their 3-4 defense, which could lead to another career high in sacks, but they'd need to find a replacement for his energy at NT first.
Picked up 30 tackles and three sacks as an important cog in the Cowboys' DE rotation.
Ratliff recorded four sacks in 15 games in 2006, and could be one of the big beneficiaries of the Cowboys' new defensive scheme.
Depth DT in the Cowboys defensive rotation.
