Knee
August 30, 2013
King is slated to undergo knee surgery, according to Darren Urban of azcardinals.com.
ANALYSIS
King is obviously going to miss some time, though the nature and seriousness of his knee procedure will clearly dictate how this affects his roster status. His absence to begin the season opens the door for one of the fringe tight ends, perhaps 2013 seventh-rounder D.C. Jefferson (hip), to land on the 53-man roster.

Even if King starts, Rob Housler is the Cardinals' TE with more value as a pass catcher.
King caught 27 passes and three touchdowns in 2011, but may face an uphill battle against a healthy Todd Heap and Rob Housler in 2012.
King has always made his living as a blocking tight end, which greatly limits his ability to produce in fantasy leagues. With a new home in Arizona backing up Todd Heap, his role stays the same.
King returns to Carolina after signing a one year contract in April. He is primarily used as a blocking tight end in the Panthers' offense, helping to clear the way for Jonathan Stewart and DeAngelo Willams. His three TDs last season were a career high, but that kind of production isn't enough to consider him as a fantasy option.
King will likely return as the Panthers' starting tight end after hauling in 21 passes for 195 yards and a touchdown in that role last season. At 6-3, 260, he's more of a blocker than athletic pass-catching option, so there's little upside here even if you're only considering him as a bye-week stopgap. Gary Barnidge will push him for the starting job during camp.
The Panthers average less than two full years of NFL experience with their first three tight ends on the depth chart, while King enters the 2008 as the incumbent starter with all of two years under his belt thus far. King quietly started all 16 games for Carolina and hauled in 46 passes for 408 yards and a pair of scores. Part of his production can be attributed to the absence of Jake Delhomme under center, so don't be surprised if his targets slide a bit as the Panthers break in a pair of younger options behind him, while Delhomme and the rebuilt receiving corps work downfield more frequently.
King played in 12 games in 2006, but had only one reception. King should continue to be a solid pass-blocker that will not show up in many box scores.
