Allen, who had 43 tackles for the Dolphins last season, will give the Patriots some added depth and experience at cornerback, but IDP relevance is probably an injury or two away for the 2001 Giants' first-rounder.

Allen missed all of last season with a knee injury but is healthy now. He is no longer a starter and his best bet for playing time is in the nickel defense but even then he may be no more than a backup.

Allen is attempting to regain his starting cornerback job after suffereing a torn ACL last season. This kind of injury is notoriously difficult to come back at full strength the following season from and Allen may find himself the third cornerback on the depth chart behind Vontae Davis and Sean Smith until he proves he is back at 100%.

Allen will once again man one of the starting cornerback positions for the Dolphins in 2009.

In 2007, Allen started all 16 games for the third time in his career, recording 62 tackles, a couple of sacks, and an interception. He goes into 2008 as the Dolphins' starting left cornerback, but he has never put up a lot of picks and hasn't been able to match the tackle numbers he posted with the Giants, so consider him a decent reserve IDP.

Allen remains a starter at CB for now, but his tackle numbers have declined in each of the past two seasons, and he has not recorded more than one interception in a season since 2003. He averaged less than four total tackles per game in 2006.

Allen should record more tackles than Sam Madison, the guy he's replacing, but there are no guarantees on getting any interceptions from him. Notching 70-80 total tackles in 2006 is realistic for Allen.

A former first round pick, injuries and inconsistency have plagued Allen the last couple seasons, and now he'll have to hold off rookie Corey Webster for the starting left cornerback job. Allen should be able to keep the job, but he'll need to do a better job staying with receivers and hanging onto the ball when he gets his hands on it.

Allen is a Pro Bowl level talent, but he's going to have to come back from a foot injury that ended his 2004 season prematurely.

Allen will be the Giants' starting left cornerback. He's emerging as a shut-down cover corner, and it would not be a surprise to see him in the Pro Bowl within a year or two.
