Moore made it back to the majors in 2017 after an injury limited him to just 29 minor-league games in 2016. He latched on with the Marlins prior to the season, and a hamstring injury to Martin Prado helped him break camp with the team as a reserve infielder. Moore was ultimately designated for assignment when Prado returned in mid-April, but further injuries saw him rejoin the big club in May and briefly step into a starting role in June and July. The 30-year-old held his own during Justin Bour's first DL stint, hitting .341/.378/.805 with five homers in 12 games (11 starts), but then struggled when Bour returned to the DL in July, hitting just .196/.245/.268 with in 51 games (20 starts) down the stretch while losing out on starts to Tomas Telis. He was removed from the 40-man roster this offseason and should serve as organizational depth going forward.
A huge spring and a vacancy in left field due to Jayson Werth's shoulder woes provided Moore with an opportunity to finally establish himself as a major league-caliber player, but he failed to capitalize and eventually found himself relegated to the end of the Nationals' bench, where he spent the rest of the season despite the various other injuries that the team suffered. He still possesses good power, but an inability to make consistent contact and a limited defensive profile aren't exactly resume-builders for a player who turns 29 in the offseason, and a major league bench role might be the best he can hope for going forward. Even so, a roster with the brittle Werth and Ryan Zimmerman still listed as starters at left field and first base, respectively, gives Moore a better outlook for at-bats than he'd find in most other organizations.
There's no doubting Moore's raw power, but after a couple of disappointing seasons bouncing back and forth between Triple-A and the Nationals' bench, there are now questions regarding how well that power might actually play. The 28-year-old has hit fewer home runs the last two seasons combined than he did at Double-A in 2011, and his inability to make consistent contact against big-league pitching could end up getting him pegged as a Quad-A player, or at best as a platoon bench bat. With Ryan Zimmerman now shifting across the diamond to protect his shoulder, there's no clear path to a starting job in Washington for Moore, so his fantasy prospects for 2015 look dim barring another Zimmerman injury. It may take a trade for him to get a real shot.
Moore struggled in the majors, but a midseason demotion to Triple-A demonstrated conclusively that he has nothing left to prove in the minors. With brittle players like Jayson Werth, Bryce Harper and Adam LaRoche ahead of him on the corner outfield/first base depth charts, Moore stands a good chance of seeing plenty of action in 2014, but he'll need to make better contact if he wants to translate that minor league power into something useful against better pitching.
Between stints beating up on Triple-A pitching, Moore proved to be a solid addition to the Nationals' bench, pounding out 10 home runs in just 156 at-bats. It took a 23.8 percent HR/FB rate to get there though, a number that seems likely to tumble. He'll return in a reserve role in the outfield and first base. He can help a fantasy team with power if he finds regular at-bats, but his low contact rate will cause his batting average to be a risk.
The Nats are transitioning from Adam Dunn to Adam LaRoche at first base this season, but Moore could be an intriguing internal solution in a couple of years. His monster .346/.404/.716 second half at High-A opened a lot of eyes, and he refined his swing enough to be considered more than just organizational filler. At 23, he was old for the level, so he'll need another big performance at Double-A to cement his status, but if he keeps building on the development he showed in 2010 he'll put himself squarely in the team's future plans.
