Scott Proctor

Proctor underwent surgery to repair a tear in the flexor tendon in his pitching elbow in October, after missing more than two months with the injury last season. Overall, it was a disastrous 2008 for Proctor, who managed just a 6.05 ERA in 38.2 innings. Proctor is expected to be ready for spring training and he'll try to win a set-up role with the Marlins. However, his mediocre control the past three seasons when healthy shouldn't get anyone too excited.

Proctor was one of three Dodgers relievers to pitch in exactly 83 games last year, though of course many of those came prior to his trade from the Yankees. Proctor also threw an incredible 102.1 innings in relief in 2006, leading to cries of his being overworked by his former and new manager Joe Torre. Look for Torre to lean on Proctor quite a bit again in 2008 assuming his subpar 64:44 K:BB doesn't take another turn for the worse.

Proctor became a workhorse in the New York bullpen last season, making 83 appearances for the Yankees. Since he was a starter in the minors, Proctor effectively throws three of the four pitches in his arsenal. His effectiveness against lefties (.204 batting average against) weighs heavily on his plus-curveball, which opposing hitters struggle with even more due to his mid-'90s fastball. With the Yankees still having adequate depth in their starting rotation, Proctor will have a similar role out of the bullpen again this season.

The Yankees like Proctor's stuff. Why not? He throws close to 100 mph. He could join Tanyon Sturtze in the sixth and seventh innings ahead of Kyle Farnsworth and Mariano Rivera and vulture a few wins but don't bet the farm on it.

Proctor throws hard. Very hard. Unfortunately, hitters knew where his 100 MPH fastball was going most of the time and hit him at a .284 clip. At 28, his days as a prospect are over.
