Valdes will look to carve out a bullpen role with the Astros after they claimed him off waivers from the Phillies at the end of last season. Joining his fifth different team in five seasons, the 36-year-old lefty sports a career 9.4 K/9 pitching mostly in long relief. With improved command after cutting his walk rate in half over the past two seasons, Valdes could give a boost to the woeful Houston bullpen if he finds a way to keep the ball in the park. The flyball pitcher allowed seven home runs in 35 innings last year (1.9 HR/9). Should that improve, Valdes could see an extended look in Houston after flip-flopping between the majors and minors throughout his career.
Valdes, a journeyman reliever, saw his first significant action in the majors last year since 2010. His strikeout rate has always been solid, but walks were a problem for him in the past. He significantly cut down his walk rate last season (just five walks in 31.0 major league innings) and become one of the more reliable options out of the Phillies' pen before a knee injury ended his season in September. Valdes is expected to be recovered from meniscus surgery in time for spring training. He's not a lock to earn a roster spot, but his solid work last year should make him a favorite for a job coming out of camp.
Valdes signed a minor league contract with the Phillies this offseason which included an invitation to spring training. Now 34, Valdes only has 51 appearances and 70 innings in his major league career so far. He's a long shot to earn a roster spot this spring.
Valdes bounced between Triple-A Buffalo and the Mets last season, serving mainly in middle relief in the majors. Valdes appeared in 38 games with the Mets in 2010, and though he throws from the left side, he's much more effective against right-handed batters. The Cardinals signed Valdes to a minor league deal, and he'll be given an opportunity to make the team out of spring training.
