Rosales was outrighted to Triple-A Reno on Saturday, the D-Backs' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
A foot injury limited him to just 16 appearances for the D-Backs last season, so Rosales will have to earn his roster spot -- likely with an early-season callup -- by pitching well this spring and opening the 2011 campaign at Reno.

For the second year in a row, Roasles spent the season shuttling between the big club and the D-Back' Triple-A affiliate, this year in Reno. His once-robust strikeout rate has dwindled considerably at the Triple-A and major league levels, which corresponds with his average 88-90 mph fastball. He doesn't project to be anythingmore than a fungible middle reliever.
In his first season with Arizona, Rosales split time between the D-Backs at Triple-A Tucson making a combined 56 relief appearances. He actually has experience in the closer's role across several of his minor league stops, but a regression in his strikeout rate (down to 6.94 K/9IP from 9.85 in 2007) doesn't bode well for his short-term chances at carving out a late-inning role in the Arizona bullpen. The D-Backs acquired him for a spare part by sending Scott Hairston to San Diego, so they'll be happy if he's able to chew up innings in middle relief at some point in 2009.
Rosales was acquired for spare-part outfielder Scott Hairston in July, but did not pitch at Triple-A Tucson or for Arizona because of fractured bone in his throwing hand. While the trade didn't make more than a back-page splash when it took place, the D-Backs appear to have quietly acquired a very nice young bullpen arm, as Rosales has struck out a batter per inning - while exhibiting good command - at all four of his minor-league stops. He'll compete for a bullpen job with Arizona during spring training, while he's a virtual lock to see some time with the D-Backs even if he doesn't make the Opening Day roster.
Rosales led the 2006 Arizona Fall League with seven saves. He has also succeeded at the Single-A and Double-A levels. Rosales might get a look as a major league middle reliever during spring training, but will more likely begin 2007 in Triple-A. He was a closer in Single-A and in the AFL, but not in Double-A. Rosales likely projects as a middle reliever in the majors.
Rosales has done quite well in pro ball so far, using an 88-90 mph fastball and a very good curveball to breeze through the lower levels as a closer. He'll face the Double-A test in 2006 and would be a middle-relief option late in 2007 if he passes.
