Arredondo didn't engender much goodwill with the Reds' organization, after violating team rules at Triple-A Louisville and earning a two-week suspension. His performance at Louisville thereafter (5.87 ERA, 39 walks in 53.2 innings) won't do him many favors, as he looks to get a fresh start elsewhere, likely on a minor league contract.

Arredondo's 2012 season is a good illustration of the fleeting nature of relievers. In the first half of the season, he was a key component of the bullpen, frequently bridging games to Sean Marshall and Aroldis Chapman, even closing out one game in May. But it all went downhill over the second half of the season (4.21 ERA, 1.56 WHIP), enough to the point where the Reds felt compelled to trade for Jonathan Broxton at the trade deadline. The overall strikeout numbers demonstrate how good he can be when he's going right, but it's a matter of debate whether the Reds will use him in high-leverage situations. It's worth noting that he had a reverse platoon split in 2012, with lefties hitting just .165/.299/.225 against him in 129 plate appearances.

Frequently when a pitcher returns from Tommy John surgery, his velocity will return before his command. That was mostly the case for Arredondo last season, though in his situation the velocity he had when last healthy with the Angels didn't fully return, and Arredondo was never exactly a control specialist. Arredondo walked 5.26 BB/9IP last year and gave up five homers in his 53 innings. Given that combo and considering he worked in the Great American Ball Park, his 3.23 ERA last season looks rather fortunate.

It didn't come up much, but you wonder if the minor hip injury he suffered in March affected him. He walked 12 in 24 innings before being demoted in June, then continued walking too many hitters after his recall. He could have been a decent saves play for 2010, but Arredondo underwent Tommy John surgery and will miss the entire season. The Angels did not offer him a contract for 2010, making him a free agent. He was also reportedly stabbed in the arm in the Dominican Republic in December, but the injury was not considered serious. Look for him to resurface in 2011.

Arredondo was nothing short of brilliant in his first big league season, going 10-2 with a 1.62 ERA in 52 appearances out of the Angels' bullpen. Arredondo struck out 55 batters in just 61 innings and his repertoire reminds a lot of people of the man he set up last season, Francisco Rodriguez. He'll likely return to that set-up role after Brian Fuentes was signed as a free agent. If Fuentes should struggle or get hurt, Arredondo looks set to take over as closer.

Arredondo's 2007 season was an interesting one to say the least. He had a 2.52 ERA with 28 strikeouts in 25 innings at Double-A Texas but was demoted to High-A Rancho Cucamonga after storming off the mound during a game. He really struggled in High-A, posting a 6.43 ERA in 35 innings, but was eventually promoted to Triple-A Salt Lake at the end of the season, a sign from the Angels that they are giving him another chance. They would be wise to do so, because Arredondo throws a mid-90's fastball and a hard splitter and has put up some impressive strikeout numbers in the minors. If Arredondo can prove he's mature enough, he has an outside chance to win a spot in the bullpen for 2008.

This converted infielder owned the Cal League in just his second year on the mound, then struggled at Double-A. Arredondo projects as a reliever, not a starter, which limits his fantasy value in the short term. Keep in mind, the Angels have developed a lot of relievers in this decade.
