Reed split time between Triple-A Toledo and Detroit last season. In 17 appearances for the Mud Hens, Reed posted a 4.24 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 26:5 K:BB ratio in 23.1 innings. He made 32 appearances out of Detroit's bullpen, finishing 0-1 with four holds while posting a 4.18 ERA, 1.58 WHIP and 26:12 K:BB ratio in 32.1 innings. After spending the past two seasons in Detroit's organization, Reed was outrighted to Triple-A in October. He declined the assignment and opted to become a free agent. The 29-year-old is currently dealing with an off-the-field legal issue, as a judge recently reinstated charges of sexual assault that were originally dismissed by a previous judge in August. The outcome of Reed's criminal charges could have an impact on his potential return to the major leagues in 2015.
Reed made his major league debut in 2013, appearing in 16 games out of the Tigers' bullpen. He finished with a 4.24 ERA, 1.54 WHIP and a 17:8 K:BB ratio in 23.1 innings. The 27-year-old righty’s fastball eclipses 95 mph, but he relies on inducing groundballs to get hitters out. Reed is expected to be in the mix for one of the Tigers’ final bullpen spots this spring, but he could find himself back in the minor leagues if the team opts to bring in outside help. Even if he sticks, his role figures to be a low-leverage opportunity.
Reed's 2012 season was a tale of two levels as he thrived over 34.2 innings at Double-A Jacksonville, posting a 2.34 ERA and 1.02 WHIP before scuffling at Triple-A New Orleans. Following his promotion, Reed allowed 26 earned runs in just 32.2 innings pitched (7.16 ERA) while collecting a lousy 1.83 WHIP over that span. Notably, his K/BB ratio dipped from 3.9 at Double-A to 1.7 against advanced competition at Triple-A. Reed has long struggled to limit free passes and despite striking out close to a batter per inning over his minor league career, has a bit of growing to do before becoming a factor in the Miami bullpen.
Acquired from the Rangers as part of the haul for Jorge Cantu, Reed's control took a big step forward in 2010, and he now looks like he could be a quality bullpen arm down the road. His fastball can touch 95 mph, but isn't quite as scary as what some of the Marlins' other young relievers can muster, but Reed combines it with a solid slider and changeup. He'll likely get a look this spring, but 2012 seems like a better bet for him to win a full-time setup job.
