Past Fantasy Outlooks
2021
2020
2015
This player will receive an outlook for the 2021 fantasy baseball season.
Grullon was long considered a defense-first backup catcher prospect, but he's added a bit of pop in recent seasons. He hit 21 homers in the minors in each of the last two years in just 90 and 108 games while hitting a combined .278/.335/.505. While his offensive stock has improved, reports on his defense have soured. He has an excellent arm, but his poor athleticism makes him a below-average receiver, a skill that gets tested far more frequently. That hurts his chances of earning a regular role, but the offensive improvements at least mean he'll have a shot at fantasy relevance if he does get starts. Those won't come in Philadelphia unless J.T. Realmuto gets injured, however. He'll have to battle Andrew Knapp just to earn the backup job and wouldn't play much in that role given how often Realmuto starts. Grullon debuted with four games in September but won't play a ton more this season without a few breaks.
Grullon opened last season at Low-A Lakewood as an 18-year-old, but the Phillies moved him back to short-season Williamsport after it was clear playing in Low-A was too much, too soon. Grullon is considered an elite prospect behind the plate. His defense will likely get him to the majors in at least a backup role. If his bat comes around at some point, he could have a long career as a starter in the majors. As things stand right now, he is a much better real life prospect than fantasy prospect.
