2025 Projections
Bounced from 40-man roster
The Marlins designated Mitchell for assignment Wednesday, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Mitchell's stint on the 40-man roster and 26-man active roster lasted just under a week, with the 30-year-old right-hander sent out to clear room for starting pitcher Edward Cabrera, who is set to make his MLB debut Wednesday versus the Nationals. In what marked his first big-league action since 2018, Mitchell made two appearances out of the Miami bullpen, giving up two earned runs on five hits and two walks over four innings.

A team must put a starter out on the mound, whether it be for one inning or multiple innings, 162 times in a season. San Diego decided to do that with Mitchell 11 times in 2018, roughly 10 more times than they should have. Mitchell has an incredible lack of swing and miss in his game and is at his best when he can throw pseudo-strikes and force batters to protect the fringes of the zone. When he misses, he is punished with the long ball as he was 12 times in just 73 innings of work last year. Mitchell is ideally the guy you bring into the game when your starter craps the bed and you need someone to soak up some work to give the bullpen some rest on a tough run of the schedule. He should not be someone on your fantasy roster, even after a semi-decent run to close out September.
