ANALYSIS
Wellemeyer started 11 games for the Giants just last year, but he was unable to overcome a hip injury this season and had only a minimal chance of being added to a major league roster. Wellemeyer ends his career with a 32-34 record and 4.83 ERA in 208 appearances, including 75 starts.

Wellemeyer doesn't strike out enough batters to be so hittable. He had just 78 strikeouts in 122.1 innings, but opposing hitters hit him at a .328 clip. The Cardinals may part ways with him, but they might not have better options for 2010.
Wellemeyer defied the odds in 2008, staying in the rotation all season after never topping 80 innings in a season in the majors. Instead of hitting a wall in the second half, Wellemeyer got even better as the season wore on, earning quality starts in nine of his last 12 starts. Unless the Cardinals make a few upgrades during the offseason, he should start 2009 in the rotation as well.
After a rough start with Kansas City, Wellemeyer joined the Cardinals in May and was quietly effective as a spot starter and long reliever. Wellemeyer appeared in 20 games with St. Louis, including 11 as a starter, and finished with a 3.11 ERA and 1.272 WHIP. St. Louis would welcome him back if he could repeat those numbers in 2008.
Wellemeyer pitched scoreless appearances in nine of his first 12 outings in Kansas City, giving the Royals the feeling that they had uncovered a hidden gem that both the Cubs and Marlins failed to see. He pitched five more scoreless appearances in his final 16 outings, walking 26 in 40+ innings of work. Despite the lack of control, the Royals tried him out as a closer late in the season and see him playing a large role in the 2007 bullpen.
Wellemeyer pitched serviceably at Triple-A, but was pounded in a 32.1 inning call-up to the bigs. Wellemeyer has a low-90s fastball and a good change-up, but he gives up too many walks and, at the big league level, too many long balls.
Wellemeyer, who has a low-90s fastball and a good change-up, got hit hard both at Triple-A and the majors last season, despite having good strikeout rates at both levels. He'll need to cut down on the walks and improve his command to succeed.
Wellemeyer, who has a low-90s fastball and a good changeup, got hit hard both at Triple-A and the majors a year ago, despite having a good strikeout rate at both levels. He'll need to cut down on the walks and improve his command before he'll have success in the high minors, let alone with the Cubs.
Wellemeyer pitched well at high-A - 87/19 K/BB ratio, 3.79 ERA - last season and also made a very solid showing at the Arizona fall league. While he struggled a bit at Double-A (4.70 ERA), he allowed just 33 hits in 46 IP. Wellemeyer, who throws in the low-90s and possesses a very good changeup, could see time with the Cubs this summer.
