May signed a minor league contract with the Brewers on Friday.
ANALYSIS
May enjoyed a brief cup of coffee in the majors with Kansas City in 2010, but he's been stuck at the Triple-A level for the past three seasons. Now 29, May hit just .226/.277/.301 with three homers and one steal in 57 games with the Pirates' Triple-A Indy affiliate last year and will likely be nothing more than organizational filler again in 2014.

May didn't make the most of his September audition last year with a .189/.205/.216 line over just 39 plate appearances, but his minor league record suggests he can be at least a major-league average backstop. He'll split time with Brayan Pena behind the plate to start the year with the better player earning backup duty once Jason Kendall returns from injury.
May rebounded well after a disappointing 2008 in which he hit just .230 in Double-A. Repeating the level this past year, May batted .306/.390/.468 in a season limited to 235 at-bats by a broken wrist. May also fared well in the Arizona Fall League with a 1.008 OPS in 40 at-bats, and could head to camp as the favorite to back up Russell Martin, barring a return by Brad Ausmus or the signing of a veteran backup.
After hitting 25 homers in High-A in 2007, May took a step back, batting just .230/.294/.403 in 392 at-bats for Double-A Jacksonville last season. His K:BB of 112:32 was indicative his struggles to make consistent contact, leaving May's future as a potential backup to Russell Martin up in the air. Expect a repeat of Double-A in 2009, and at age 24, it's a make-or-break year for May.
Coming off a .256/.313/.465 (25 home runs) performance for the organization's High-A affiliate in Inland Empire, May was added to the 40-man roster this offseason. The 23-year-old May could eventually be the club's backup to Russell Martin, but let's see how he does at Double-A first.
