Linares had a strong spring training in 2011 and it looked like the 27-year-old Cuban defector might be able to help at the major league level at some point, but he suffered a season-ending ankle injury in May. He's advanced defensively in center field and is acclimating to the pitching in the States. He's healthy again and played in the Arizona Fall League. Learning to hit secondary offerings will be key to advancement. Linares will likely be assigned to Triple-A Pawtucket where we'll see if he can develop a more consistent bat, improve his pitch selection and cover more of the plate.
Linares was one of the better outfielders in Cuba and just missed the cut for Cuba's 2009 World Baseball Classic team. He defected before the 2010 season and signed with the Red Sox. He hit just .246 at High-A and Double-A as he got his first U.S. Exposure in 17 games. He caught fire in the Arizona Fall League by hitting .397 with three home runs and a 1.084 OPS. Linares at 26 is a bit of a mystery, but he can play center field and will likely begin the season at Double-A. Even still, it wouldn't be a surprise to see him in the majors in a reserve role this summer.
Linares was one of the better outfielders in Cuba and just missed the cut for Cuba's 2009 World Baseball Classic team. He recently defected and hopes to sign with a MLB team in 2010.
