Closer Watch

Arizona - Another blown save for Heath Bell on July 10 (his fifth blown save of the season) was apparently the last straw for manager Kirk Gibson, as the Diamondbacks' skipper gave the ball to 33-year-old Brad Ziegler to close out two of the team's final four games before the break. David Hernandez also picked up a save last weekend, following three appearances in as many days for Ziegler, but it appears Ziegler is going to get handle ninth-inning duties for the time being. While J.J. Putz finished the first half with five consecutive scoreless appearances, there's been no indication that he's on the verge of returning to the closer's role.

Seattle - After giving up three runs in his first two appearances of last week, Tom Wilhelmsen pitched a perfect ninth inning against the Angels on Sunday to earn his 19th save of the season. The 29-year-old right-hander has posted a 8.47 ERA since June 1 (he had a microscopic 0.75 ERA prior to then), and it remains to be seen whether the time off afforded by the break helped rejuvenate Wilhelmsen. Stephen Pryor (oblique) struggled in his first rehab appearance with Low-A Everett earlier this week (two earned runs over 0.2 innings), but if he can get right, he could be an option for the Mariners down the road.

Recommended Pickup
Alex Wood, P, ATL - Wood began the season as a starter down at Double-A Mississippi before getting the call in late May to serve as a long man out of Atlanta's bullpen. All in all, Wood has posted a 2.45 ERA and a 10.6 K/9 in 16 appearances (one start) for the Braves this year, with a 1.26 ERA over 57 innings for Mississippi, and it seems he may have earned himself a promotion to the major league rotation. The 22-year-old left-hander was sent down last weekend in order to get stretched back out into a starter, and while the team hasn't revealed its plans for Wood, MLB.com's Mark Bowman said "all indications" point to Wood joining the Braves' rotation by the end of July. There's certainly a chance the team made the move simply with starting pitching depth in mind, but considering it left Luis Avilan as the lone southpaw in the bullpen, some sort of shake-up with the pitching staff seems likely. Kris Medlen appears to be the most realistic candidate for a move into a relief role, since his changeup has proven successful against lefties, though with Brandon Beachy (elbow) inching closer to a return and Julio Teheran holding his own, it's possible the Braves could be gearing up to trade one of their starters.

Other Recent RecommendationsJhoulys Chacin, Anthony Rendon, Danny Salazar, Ricky Nolasco and Wade Miley
